Samuel Jason Whatley serves as the founding partner of our firm, establishing Whatley & Associates in 2001. With over 25 years of legal experience, Jason has consistently provided exceptional service and valuable insights. He embarked on his legal career after graduating from Middle Tennessee State University in 1993 and obtaining his Juris Doctorate from Cumberland School of Law at Samford University in 1998.

In addition to his academic achievements, Jason’s passion for legal education is evident through his role as an assistant professor at Middle Tennessee State University, where he also coached the university’s mock trial team. Starting his practice in Murfreesboro and later relocating to Columbia, Jason has built a reputation for his eloquence and strategic prowess in the courtroom, particularly in domestic law. His expertise extends across various legal domains, encompassing criminal cases and civil litigation throughout Tennessee.

Beyond his professional commitments, Jason dedicates time to coaching the Mock Trial Program at Agathos Classical School. Together with partner Cory L. Ricci, Jason has guided the team to significant achievements, including two state championships and the prestigious title of the 2019 National High School Mock Trial champions.

Despite the demands of his career, Jason draws strength and support from his cherished family. His wife and five children—Samuel, Matthew, Mary Grace, Kate, and Jane Anne—are his pillars of support and a source of joy outside his professional endeavors.

CORY L. RICCI

Cory has practiced with our firm since 2013. As a trial lawyer, Cory handles a diverse range of cases across family law, criminal law in all grand divisions of the Tennessee Courts. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Alabama Birmingham with a Bachelor of Science and earned his Juris Doctor from Cumberland School of Law at Samford University.

Cory’s professional career is distinguished by his thousands of hours spent in the courtroom, dynamic and strategic approach to difficult cases, and delivering optimal results for his clients. He is dedicated to being accessible to his clients, drawing on his extensive experience to offer both guidance and reassurance in their times of need.

Beyond his legal practice, Cory spends ample time pouring into Columbia’s youth through coaching a local high school mock trial team alongside his partner, Jason Whatley. A seasoned figure in the mock trial world himself with over 15 years of coaching experience, Cory’s proudest professional achievement is guiding his students to claim two back-to-back State Championships and the National Championship in 2019.

Cory is married to his law school sweetheart. He spends his spare time running, cooking, stargazing, and spending time with his wife and two daughters.

David Christensen

David Christensen, more commonly known as Dave, offers exceptional services in criminal defense and civil matters. Dave has been a licensed attorney since 2005, furthermore he has a myriad of experiences that continually are showcased through his knowledge of law. He received a Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of Mississippi in 2001 and continued to Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law in Memphis to later attain his Juris Doctorate.

Throughout his distinguished career, Dave has devoted a substantial portion of his professional life to serving the Public Defender’s Office of Tennessee for 11 years, accumulating a remarkable 18 years of experience in criminal defense. His tenure speaks volumes about his commitment to justice and his proficiency in navigating the complexities of criminal law. In 2023, Dave made the transition to Whatley & Ricci, where his expertise has become an invaluable asset to the firm’s criminal defense practice. Widely respected for his expertise, Dave is recognized as the linchpin of the firm’s defense strategies.

Beyond his legal pursuits, Dave finds joy in spending quality time with his family and sharing his love for Rugby through coaching. His multifaceted interests and dedication to both his profession and personal life paint a picture of a well-rounded individual who excels in every endeavor he undertakes.

MCKENZIE LYNCH PARKS

McKenzie Lynch is one of our newest attorneys in our firm, however she is nothing short of new to the legal field. Beginning at our firm in 2020 as a paralegal, McKenzie has served this firm in a myriad of ways. McKenzie handles a variety of cases with a primary focus in family and juvenile law.

McKenzie’s academic journey showcases her commitment to law. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Tennessee Knoxville, laying the groundwork for her legal career. Demonstrating exceptional determination, she pursued her legal education while working full-time at our firm. This dual commitment culminated in her graduation from Nashville School of Law with a Juris Doctorate in May 2023, and she became a licensed attorney in October of the same year.

Outside of her professional pursuits, McKenzie finds joy in spending quality time with her family and pets. Her dedication to both her career and personal life underscores her well-rounded nature and unwavering commitment to excellence in all aspects of her life.

Mitzi Montes brings invaluable expertise and support to our firm and plays a crucial role in supporting Attorney Cory L. Ricci as his right hand. Originally from Mississippi, Mitzi relocated to Middle Tennessee in 2001 and later settled in Maury County in 2013. Her journey into the legal field began with the completion of an Associate’s Degree in Paralegal Studies in 2007, marking the foundation of her career.

Mitzi’s professional trajectory includes a five-year tenure with the Davidson County District Attorney’s office, during which she gained immense legal experience and insight. Building on this experience, she transitioned to private practice for several years before joining our team in 2015. Mitzi’s multifaceted expertise covers various legal domains, further enriching our firm with strategic insights and substantial value.
